Last night there were two students at my Acrylic Painting Workshop at the Westfield Creative Arts. Phyllis finished her tropical beach scene and a new student Kathleen a watercolorist worked on a Maine ocean sunset. My painted version and the original photo is below. Kathleen as a watercolor artist is used to using a lot of water with watercolor painting. In acrylic painting you use less water and more paint. She worked fast and did a great job with her painting, finishing it in the two hours. Sorry, I don't have a photo of hers!

This past Sunday there were five students at my West Springfield Michaels Acrylic Painting Workshop. Two were brand new! Lauri decided to join her husband Alex and daughter Lexi in learning to paint. She did great! We use as a source reference my oil painting of "On the Beach" which I painted plein air at Charlestown, R.I. years ago.

This watercolor painting of Grandmother's Garden with mat and frame is being donated to the silent auction at the 53rd Annual Baystate Noble Ball to take place at the Mass Mutual Center in Springfield on November 4th. Proceeds from the auction will help purchase a new CT scanner for the Westfield Noble Hospital Emergency Department. A worthy cause!

Busy weekend! I was asked to be a last minute replacement as a judge for the Mattoon Street Art Festival along with another judge Saturday morning. I had to go from tent to tent interviewing the exhibitors to see if there work was totally hand made by them. First time ever to be a judge in an art festival! A lot of crafts rather than arts, fiber, glass, ceramics, jewelry, wood products, and then the real art with painting and photography. We got our heads together and made the choices for Best in Show (to Jeff Kern for his fabulous paintings) and then 1st and 2nd places in each category. It turned out great with the assistance of the other judge who was great!
Great fun painting plein air yesterday on the Westfield Bridge painting the Westfield River. I have my photos below showing the progress of my painting in the two hours I painted. I usually start with an outline of the shapes and the horizon line with a dark mixture. Next my sky and clouds because that changes so quickly. Then the shadows in the trees and the landscape. I use several greens, (sap green, earth green, viridian, olive green) as well as add yellow ochre or cad yellow and white to my greens. I never use black like the French Impressionists but create a dark with alizaron crimson and ultramarine blue and perhaps some burnt umber. Made some purple for the river and added the blues (ultramarine blue & cerulean blue and white). Added textured highlights in the tree foregrounds and the land shapes on the right. My style is realism with an impressionistic flair.

Five Students at Westfield Creative Arts at the Rinnova Building last night! Two were brand new and did excellent! Lois almost finished her Vermont landscape (my acrylic version below). Sandy who was visiting Gloria came and started the Hampton Ponds autumn landscape (my acrylic version below). She was dabbing the paint like a master impressionist! Scott started a dramatic close up of a tropical flower. Phylliss, a first time student did very well with an Hawaiian Beach scene! Gloria almost finished her Bridge of Flowers garden scene. Each student worked on their own different painting and kept me hopping!! Great fun!!

Great Time painting in oil and acrylic! Top picture is After Renoir-Vase of Flowers, 9" x 12", acrylic on board, started as a demo at my Michaels painting class and finished at home. Bottom is an oil painted plein air or on location, Sunny Afternoon in Grandmother's Garden, 9" x 12"
I had a great time painting in my basement studio this 12" x 16" oil painting on a canvas panel. I used my own photos that I had taken of a local scene. I had to climb down an embankment under a bridge to get this view!
Little River Autumn View
