I painted this "Maine Coast" oil painting from my photo that I took last July when I was on vacation in Wells, Maine. It is oil on canvas, 18" x 24" and I used thick textured oil painting. Great fun painting in my studio on a rainy day when I couldn't paint outside!

I had a great time Sunday afternoon in the center of Westfield painting this historic building that used to be the post office decades ago! I still need to work on it and put in the final touches which will take a couple of hours. I will download the final painting when it is ready!
Almost finished! At a busy rotary in downtown Westfield!
Outlined the shape of the building, placed the sky with clouds and started blocking in the colors of the building.

What do you paint on a rainy day and you can't go outside? Paint from a painted study and color copy! I finished this larger 20" x 16" painting on canvas with textured oil paint in my studio. I started it on another rainy day and was waiting for the opportunity to finish it!

Last night we had a great time with an outdoor acrylic painting class in a garden in Westfield! Four students and myself were painting in the beautiful garden of Les, Jim and Rich who graciously volunteered their home!. We had a great time and enjoyed wine, cheese and crackers afterwards. Also entertained by two beautiful Labs!

I enjoyed a quick vacation in Wells/Ogunquit, Maine last week where I painted plein air on the rocks on the Marginal Way. Also, I had a chance to visit the fantastic Ogunquit Museum of American Art. Please see pictures below of my outside painting and also the beautiful grounds, sculpture and paintings at this museum.

Again painting plein air in Grandmother's Garden to take advantage of the summer flowers. I painted for a couple hours and got a good start on a painting while battling the mosquitoes! Photos below of the scene I chose. I will post the final painting when it is finished.

Steps in creating an outdoor painting: top picture: I sketch out the main shapes with a brush in a dark color (ultramarine blue and burnt umber), 2nd picture: usually start with the top in this case the sky and then place the darks throughout the painting (with viridian green, ultramarine blue), 3rd picture: made my way with some of the basic elements such as the pathways, the structure of the building, outline of the tree trunks and limbs and the medium greens, the photo reference is just a snapshot in time. The light on the various bushes changes drastically over the time period. Bottom picture is the final painting. I complete the painting with the lighter green colors and the different colors of the flowers blossoms. I then add highlights with details to the building and the flowering tree on the left. After a day looking at it I make the final edits where I see corrections have to be made. I let it dry for a couple months before I brush a gloss varnish on the painting.
Sketched in outlines of shapes in brush with dark color
Painted top sky, and added darks in foliage
Placed main colors in building, pathways and medium greens

I had a great time this past weekend attending a plein air painting workshop with master painter TM Nicholas in Gloucester, MA! During the two days he did two demos and we painted in the afternoon in two locations in Gloucester. He visited each of students (nine total) and offered his suggestions. At the end of the workshop he critiqued each painting. What an intensive workshop and a great learning experience! Below is TM doing the demo on Sunday and my painting of "View from Fisherman's Park", oil on canvas panel, 12" x 16".
